Washington: Texas Governor Rick Perry Saturday announced his intention to run for the office of the US president, Xinhua reported.

At a conservative gathering in Charleston, Perry touted his economic achievements in Texas, which created more than one million jobs in the decade he led the state.

The 51-year-old Republican also directed criticism at President Barack Obama, casting him as a failure of leadership who has diminished the standing of the US and its economic prospects.
